Professor ends life after plagiarism allegation

SURAT: A 26-year-old faculty of Wadia Women's College committed suicide by hanging herself at her house on Punagam Magob Road here on Saturday. The deceased was upset after allegations of plagiarism in her MPhil thesis. Varsha Vaja was found hanging from the ceiling of her room. She had used her dupatta to hang herself. An anonymous letter written to her college,Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) and a few local newspapers had alleged that she had indulged in plagiarism for her thesis. A local newspaper published the allegations which disturbed her. The deceased was scared that she would lose her job, her family members told police. They also said she had received calls from a person who made allegations of plagiarism against her. Vaja was working as assistant professor in the department of English at Wadia Women's College. She had done her MPhil from VNSGU. Her guide Rakesh Desai, head of the department of English, VNSGU, said, "She came to meet me with her colleague and fiance. She expressed her fears over the allegations which were made by an anonymous person. The allegations were baseless," Desai added.
